I will admit it: I'm a huge nerd when it comes to digging into the world's past. History was always my favorite class in school and I would take every opportunity for extra credit research even though my grades were totally fine.
That said, I was floored when I stumbled across these lesser-known facts and photos from yesteryear. So many experts and aficionados have dedicated their lives to uncovering every secret hidden in the days gone by, but there are still always more out there waiting to dazzle us.
I really can't figure out which of these stunned me the most, but I know I'll never forget Willard Scott's face painted up as the first ever Ronald McDonald mascot, sporting a cup on his nose rather than the more traditional red nose.

There's no denying this man's dedication to a project. No matter how silly it might seem, I can't help but be impressed with his persistence.
5. Maria Spelterini
I have an enormous fear of heights, so I can't even imagine how this brave woman managed to pull off such an intimidating task.

Duke clearly didn't want to waste his out-of-this-world opportunity! It makes me wonder what I would bring if I ever got the chance.

They aren't as big a deal now, but back in the day the itsy-bitsy, teensy-weensy bathing suits made a huge splash as women started suddenly flashing more skin at the beach.
9. Sneaky Booze
This doesn't seem like the most subtle solution for the dry era, but you can't say it's not imaginative. And apparently it got the job done!
10. Whiskey Vending Machine
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, this machine probably wasn't the best idea for public areas where kids might mistake it for soda.
11. Baby Gas Masks
World War II was a hectic time for everyone, but these little guys look like they're about to blast off in a rocket rather than breathe easier.
