Here’s Why Women Should Drink Less Than Men

You've probably heard by now that the moderate number of drinks per day varies between men and women, but have you ever wondered why? The below video from Business Insider brilliantly tackles just that topic.

BI reports that multiple studies suggest even moderate alcohol has been found to increase your chances of cancer — and specifically breast cancer. So even while doctors suggest that one glass of wine with dinner, women increase their chances of heart disease and diabetes even after her first drink — even while men decrease their chances of these diseases with moderate drinking. BI outlines a number of theories about why this might be, one of which is that alcohol builds up in the bloodstream more in women.

All of this, in addition to a recent study reported by CNN that found that women who consumed more alcoholic beverages per day had a higher risk of weight gain and obesity — regardless of a healthy diet, regular exercise, and other factors that help combat weight gain. Drinking more than three drinks, they say, can really mess with your body's ability to metabolize. Some food (or booze?) for thought!

Let's not forget that every individual is different, though, and that there are certainly exceptions to the rule.
