In a freak accident, a woman fell more than 20 feet from a roof in India and was impaled by a steel rod.
It happened when the woman, Khatija, was being attacked by a band of monkeys. As she desperately tried to fight them off, she lost her balance and fell onto a bar-lined boundary wall.
The 20-year-old victim was horribly injured, as the rod went straight through her stomach and out her back.
The wounded woman wasn't found for about an hour. Finally, family members discovered her and tried to free her. They rushed her to the hospital with the steel rod still jammed through her abdomen.
Khatija underwent an emergency surgery, and amazingly, doctors were successful. They removed the bar from her belly, and she is stable, according to the presiding surgeon, Dr. Shishir Jaiswal.
However, her recovery will be long and difficult due to the severity of the injury she sustained. According to Jam Press, she may not ever fully recover.
Wild monkey attacks are not completely uncommon in India. In another incident in July, wild monkeys took a human baby from his father and threw the child from a rooftop. The baby was killed instantly.
Images of the steel rod piercing straight through the woman's abdomen circulated on social media. From the looks of the situation, it's truly incredible that she managed to survive and, according to the surgeon, is "out of danger."
