Sometimes people deserve a second chance, like Cerena Hubbard. She is very grateful for those who believe in giving second chances, because she was given a second chance right when she needed it in life.
Cerena Hubbard used to live in poverty and be addicted to drugs, and then she became pregnant with her daughter. Some people might've given up after realizing they had nowhere to go, but Cerena didn't. She realized that she had to turn her life around.
"Getting pregnant with my daughter gave me a reason to really look back on my life and say, 'Where do you want to go with it?'" Cerena explained.
That's when Cerena found Maggie's Place, a local safe-haven center in Phoenix, Arizona, that provides shelter and resources to young, single mothers who have nowhere else to go. Over 800 woman have been helped by the organization in the 17 years they've been open.
"We don't want [the women] to feel isolated, and we know that's a common problem for people experiencing poverty," Julie Carlberg, a worker at Maggie's Place, said.
Cerena currently lives with several other women at Maggie's Place, and can stay for five months, or even a bit longer. Women are given every bit of support imaginable and can even access the support throughout their lives, if need be.
Unfortunately, Maggie's Place can only house so many women, so up to 70 women per week are turned away. Cerena is so grateful for her second chance and wants to remind other women to never give up.
"There is hope," she says. "There is definitely hope. You're not alone, never alone."
