Prince William Doesn’t Wear A Wedding Band And Neither Did His Father And Grandfather

Exchanging wedding rings is a tradition that can be traced back to the Greek Orthodox Church in the 1300s, according to the Knot.

Since then, the custom has been picked up by societies all over the world, who identify the wedding ring and the wedding band as symbols of marriage and commitment.

As with most things throughout history, wedding rings and jewelry in general were popularized by members of royalty, who had the most access to luxury items.

However, today you may notice that Prince William doesn't wear a wedding ring. This is extremely interesting considering the British royal family's notorious commitment to tradition.

For instance, no member of the royal family can sign an autograph, and they aren't allowed to vote or supposed to eat shellfish.

One might think that Prince William would want to wear a ring to honor tradition. Still, you'll notice his ring finger is constantly bare.

Prince William and Catherine Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, are one of the most famous married couples in the world.

With all their riches and family heirlooms, you might think that Prince William would wear a wedding band.

Prince William, however, chooses not to wear a wedding ring. Before your mind starts wandering to trouble in paradise, you should know that it's far from a symbol of a royal relationship on the rocks.

In fact, according to Timea palace aide for the royal family was quick to shoot down speculation about any sinister reason as to why William doesn't wear a ring.

"It is simply down to personal preference," the aide said, adding: "It was something the couple discussed but Prince William isn't one for jewelry."

On the other hand, Kate apparently is one for jewelry.

She is almost always seen wearing her stunning sapphire engagement ring, a family heirloom which is comprised of one Ceylon sapphire surrounded smaller diamonds.

As you can see, the beautiful ring was originally worn by Princess Diana. It was gifted to her by her then-spouse, Prince Charles.

While not wearing a wedding band might not sound very royal, apparently Prince William is not alone.

His father Prince Charles didn't wear a wedding band while he was married to Princess Diana, according to Time.

He has, however, always worn a signet ring on the pinky of his left hand. The signet ring is a mark of his station and royal title.

It wasn't until Prince Charles' second marriage, to Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, that he began to wear a wedding band stacked with his signet ring.

Charles and William are in even more good company. Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, also never wore a wedding band.

If you're that well-known maybe there is no need to announce your marriage to the world. Everyone already knows anyway, and it seems to be something of a family tradition.
