Leftover Buckets Become Incredible Hanging Tomato Planters

Gardening is fun and relaxing, but depending on where you live, limited space may be an issue.

Gardening without room in your backyard is possible, however. All you have to do is look up!

Planting vertical gardens and hanging plants are a great way to utilize unused outdoor space.

Just because you don't have a huge backyard, doesn't mean you can't plant flowers, fruits, and vegetables. You just need to do what these clever DIY-ers did and get creative by maximizing your space.

I found this project from Imgur user doghaircrasher who turned ordinary five-gallon buckets into amazing hanging planters.

One of the most common and popular vegetables found in any garden is the tomato. However, tomato plants are robust and take up more room than a lot of other root plants.

Luckily, this clever DIY-er proved that tomatoes are particularly easy to grow upside down using some buckets and a few simple steps.

Scroll through below for a look at this DIY upside-down tomato planter tutorial. Are you planning on doing any gardening this spring? Let us know in the comments.

Planting is possible even if you don't have a big backyard. Tomato plants are particularly easy to grow from hanging planters.

All you need to begin are some five-gallon buckets from any home improvement store.

You can prime and paint these buckets any color you'd like to match your outdoor decor.

Next, use a hole saw to drill a hole in the center of the bucket, about two inches wide. This is where your tomato plant will begin to grow.

Then, drill a half dozen drain holes around the circumference of the bucket. This will allow excess water to escape without weighing your bucket down.

In order to prevent soil from falling out of the little holes you just created, you'll need to cut out permeable landscape fabric.

Use one of your buckets as a guide to determine how large your circles should be.

You also need to create a space in the middle of the cloth to allow the tomato plant to grow through the cloth, out through the two-inch hole in your bucket.

Fold your circle in half and cut a one-inch slit in the middle. Fold it the opposite way and cut another one-inch slit.

Place your cloth on the botttom of the bucket.

Now its time to insert the tomato plant! Carefully guide the leaves through the slitted fabric and the hole in the bucket.

Fill the bucket with moisture control potting soil and a little bit of fertilizer.

Hang your tomatoes in a place that gets plenty of sun, and don't forget to water your plants every day if you don't get any rainfall!

This DIY-er isn't the only one who has found success with this upside-down bucket method.

Plenty of gardeners have been able to grow full tomato plants.

In a few short months, your tomato plants should look as luscious as these.

All that's left to do is to enjoy the fruits (or veggies) of your labor!
