The scene is a familiar one for many of us — with bruises, scabs, and plenty of mud, we can all remember barreling into our school's field day activities like a stampede of wild animals. But in a rare show of restraint and unbridled compassion, 6-year-old Albert Lutkin wasn’t concerned with whether or not he would win one of the races.
Instead, little Albert slowed to a light jog so that he could run next to Jake Gladstone, a fellow classmate who happens to have cerebral palsy. Jake had suffered from a seizure when in his mom’s womb, which paralyzed the right side of his body. That made it impossible to run as fast as the other boys in his class, but that didn’t stop Albert from bringing the race to his friend.
Often, children are the ones who teach adults about the true meaning of kindness. Did you see those kids who performed random acts of kindness on the street? Or that whole class who gave up their school trip so that their friends could come, too? Every day, young people are touching the lives of everyone around them.
When asked whether Albert had a good time that day, he responded with a little smile and a shy “Yeah.” There’s just no two ways around it — both Albert and Jake are incredible little boys, and they’ll certainly grow into even more incredible young men.
