The Lullaby Project is an amazing initiative organized by Carnegie Hall, through which young disadvantaged mothers are given the chance to explore music with professional musicians.
Moms get a chance to write down their thoughts and feelings, read them aloud in groups, and even compose music to pair with those words. Then, they perform their work for a live audience alongside a band!
"I'm gonna be there for my child," says one mom, looking down at her musical composition and the fruit of those long hours working to put the song together. "My child's gonna get the best."
Many of these incredibly brave women face numerous struggles and obstacles which they must — and have — overcome. They come from inexcusable conditions, forced into homeless shelters, and with very few support systems in place to help them.
But that’s why the work of Carnegie Hall is so important and so desperately needed.
This reminds me of the music therapist who composes music to the tune of babies’ heartbeats! Or the patient who had a jam session with his doctor in order to calm his nerves about an impending surgery. Music is — and will always be — a very important tool for healing.
Since 2007, over 150 moms have participated in this program. In a safe and welcoming environment, they’re encouraged to form very special bonds with their new children through the power of music.
