Melania Trump wears sunglasses so often that people are suspicious. After all, frequently sporting sunglasses during the day is one thing, but why would she wear sunglasses at night? It’s not something that has just happened once, either. And every time it happens, it reignites a fairly popular conspiracy theory: that Melania actually has a body double, and the Melania we see wearing sunglasses at night is actually “fake.”
This month, the rumors started circulating again when people shared photos and videos of Melania wearing sunglasses at night on social media. “Who THE F— wears sunglasses at night outdoors?” one person wrote on X on December 1. “… unless to obscure the lookalike. Yeah, that ain’t her.”
Many others have made the same claim.
Reacting to that X post, several people agreed, writing things like, “You can immediately see in the nose and chin that it’s not her. Fake.” and “She’s holding [President Donald Trump’s] hand. Not Melania.” People have shared the same theory on Reddit. One Redditor observed how Melania didn’t really look like herself one day while wearing “massive sunglasses.”
They wrote, “Sometimes she doesn’t look like herself. She smiles. Her nose looks thicker. Something….itches my brain and it thinks, ‘Is that Melania?’ Anybody else think there’s a stand-in double sometimes?” And yes, other people really are convinced that Melania has a body double. Some have even suggested that the alleged “fake Melania” could be a robot.

Several proponents of the theory are convinced that Melania’s husband probably wouldn’t notice is she had a body double. “They live completely separate lives and barely see each other,” one Redditor wrote. “I bet he wouldn’t even know if it WAS a stand in.”
And if the conspiracy theory is true and Melania somehow does have someone taking her place sometimes? “Good for her,” another Redditor said. “I wouldn’t want to stand next to him either.”
Others are far less convinced — for pretty hilarious reasons.

One person said they have doubts about the conspiracy theory because a body double would presumably be a better actor. “My problem with this theory is that if she was an imposter, then she would be acting more affectionate towards Trump,” they theorized. “If she was paid to impersonate Melania, then why wouldn’t he pay her to act like a proper wife?”
Another person said Melania probably wears sunglasses at night because she’s tired … of dealing with her husband. “The simpler answer is that she is hiding the bags under eyes,” they wrote. “Anyone married to that monstrosity gets no sleep (he’s up at 3am posting on twaddle unsocial).”
An expert has offered a different opinion.
Though some social media users are convinced that we’re actually looking at a body double when we see Melania in sunglasses, fashion psychologist Dawn Karen said Melania uses sunglasses to shield herself from the public. “She tends to wear sunglasses and hats to shield herself from the public eye,” Dawn told the Mirror (per the U.S. Sun). “As she’s stated in previous interviews, she often feels as though she is being bullied.”
Melania’s fashion choices seem to act as “armor of some sort,” Dawn claimed, adding, “When she’s looking out into the audience, she cannot see the entire crowd due to her sunglasses or her hat.”
