For Anthony Reeder, an Iraq War veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, nothing has been easy since his return stateside. He lives in Columbia, MO, and every day is a struggle to overcome his demons.
Before he met a beautiful rescue pit bull, he and many of his fellow veterans self-medicated with alcohol. "We couldn't sleep. I still don't sleep much to this day," Reeder says.
And then a rescue pit bull entered into his life, and she’s been quite busy.
"Peggy has two jobs: One is to create distance between me and other people, and the other one is to alert me when other people are approaching."
Working dogs — whether directly serving their country overseas or tending to the needs of veterans who return home — are an absolutely integral part of our history. So, too, are the military horses who provide so much assistance, both in and out of the line of duty.
What’s more, this video also shares the touching story of Keith Kryger, a Vietnam War veteran who frequents Cedar Creek Ranch. "I've had strokes. I can't walk with one leg," he says, and yet, miraculously, he's left a wheelchair behind thanks to the efforts of his recovery horse, JD.
These animals are more than just our loyal companions — they’re our saving grace as well.
