I love using my free time to catch up on upcycling projects I've been dying to try.
Whether I'm repurposing old tires in the garage or creating an impressive star-spangled tank top, a long weekend is the perfect time to dust off the table saw or glue gun and get to work on a one-of-a-kind DIY project.
And when I stumbled upon this gorgeous American flag coffee table, I just had to learn how to make it myself!
I found this patriotic piece from Instructables user Brown6041. Using official American flag measurements — along with a saw, some basic hardware, and a propane torch — this DIY-er built a beautiful wooden table that is sure to impress anyone with a patriotic spirit.
And what's more, this piece doubles as a fantastic table or a funky wooden art display, depending on your preference.

Our DIY-er printed out the proper design grid calculations to simulate the measurements of a standard American flag. He then bought a pack of foam star stickers with a 1-inch diameter and laid them out on his grid.
He traced the stars with a fine-tipped pen and removed the stickers. He then sample tested by spray-painting over the stencil.
Ready to start on the actual project, he grabbed some 2×4 plywood pieces and used a miter saw to cut them down for the stripes of the American flag.
He created seven short strips and six longer ones to perfectly mimic the American flag. He then went on to glue them to his mounting wood.
Next, our DIY-er got to work with the blowtorch, carefully burning one side of each of the strips. Using his wood gluer and pin nailer, he began incorporating each piece into the larger flag design.
He spray-painted the star stencils onto his plywood to get a sense of where each one should go. He then chiseled away the stars, revealing the wood underneath and creating a relief pattern.
He finished up by staining the entire project, taking pains to add less to certain areas to give the piece a more contrasted look. In preparation to hang it, he recommended using a French cleat and building some extra trim.
To turn his American flag relief into a proper table, he bought some table legs and added a piece of glass to the top and bottom. After assembling the entire project, he was ready to go!
This easy craft project only required a handful of tools and a single day to build in its entirety.
Instructables user Brown6041 brilliantly created a gorgeous and patriotic piece of art that can either be hung as wall art or used as a coffee table!
