When Chelsea Handler got a peek at one of Reese Witherspoon’s Instagram photos of herself and her son, Deacon Phillippe, she came in clutch with a comment meant to compliment Reese. But what started out as a compliment turned into a somewhat inappropriate moment that the Internet called out big time.
In the photo, Reese is standing next to Deacon, whom she shares with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. By now, we all know that the three of them, along with Reese and Ryan’s daughter Ava Phillippe, look alike more than most families. But for Reese, the resemblance goes beyond just looking like her kids and has entered the territory of looking as youthful as them.
Chelsea Handler’s comment to Reese Witherspoon was inappropriate for some.
Chelsea’s comment on Resse’s Instagram post seems harmless enough at face value. After Reese shared a photo of herself with Deacon in honor of her middle child’s twenty-third birthday, Chelsea commented, “Happy Birthday, Deacon. You two look like a couple in the first slide.” Her sentiment seems to have been to compliment Reese on her youthful appearance.
Other photos in the slide include a selfie of Reese and Deacon when Deacon was much younger and a more recent selfie where Deacon looks a lot like his dad, Ryan. In the first photo in question, Reese has her hands on her son’s shoulder and he towers over her as they pose on a beach.
In the caption of the post, Reese wrote, “The year you were born, there was a fire in LA. Raging all around us. Somehow that fire forged you: You were born into the light, you carry it inside you, and you help us see it in ourselves. I love you so much, so lucky to be your mom.”
Chelsea Handler was called out as “tacky” for her comment.
Some people did respond to Chelsea’s comment to agree with her or add an “LOL” in reaction to her assessment of the mother/son duo. Others agreed that it was a “weird thing to say” for the longtime comedian.
“A couple? Lol more like siblings,” someone replied to Chelsea in the comment thread. And, admittedly, a comment about the pair looking like siblings makes a lot more sense and it is a thousand times less icky than Chelsea’s original comment.
Someone else took it a step further and added, “You’re vile and the fact this is what you saw speaks volumes about you.”
“Was that supposed to be funny?” Another person wrote. “It’s not. You’re not.”
And after Entertainment Weekly shared a Facebook post about the bizarre comment, users had the same debate in that comment section, with one person saying that Chelsea’s comment was “tacky” and another adding, “How could they look like a couple when they literally look like the exact same person?”
Reese Witherspoon often makes headlines for her uncanny resemblance to her kids.
Maybe it’s because Reese and Ryan already look a bit similar to each other and were once seen as a sort of golden couple because of this fact. But their kids look so much like the both of them that, any time either of them share family photos on social media, there is a barrage of comments about how much Reese and Ryan’s kids look like both of them.
And, with each passing year, the comments go back and forth to call Reese’s kids with Ryan either her twins or his twins. It really varies, but it’s probably more accurate to say that Reese and her son look like siblings rather than a couple.
