Reese Witherspoon Shares ‘Weird’ Lesson Her Kids Will ‘Always Remember’ Learning From Her

When Reese Witherspoon isn’t busy producing or starring in hit films and TV series, she’s a mom of three. The Legally Blonde actress doesn’t often post about her children. However, Reese Witherspoon recently shared the “weird” lesson her kids will “always remember” learning from her.

As a refresher, Reese, 48, shares two kids, Ava, 25, and Deacon, 21, with her first ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe. She also has a son, Tennessee, 12, with her second ex-husband, Jim Toth. And she recently shared a sweet anecdote involving one of her sons.

Reese Witherspoon’s kids remember a touching lesson she taught them.

On March 15, Reese shared a sweet story in a video on her Instagram Stories.

“We were out to dinner the other night — me and my girlfriend and my two boys — and my girlfriend said, ‘What is one thing that your mom says to you that you always remember?'” she recalled. “And one of them said, ‘She always tells me if I have a choice to be normal or a choice to be weird, I should be weird. And it’s OK to stand out and be different.'”

She said it ‘meant so much’ to her.

Reese was touched by her son’s revelation, although she didn’t specify if it came from Deacon or Tennessee.

“It filled my heart with the deepest joy that he learned that from me,” she explained. “It just meant so much to me that my kids know that it’s OK to be different and that it can actually end up being your superpower.”

Previously, Reese admitted to being OK with embarrassing her kids.

During a January 2025 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, host Jimmy Fallon called Reese “one of the coolest moms.” He also brought up the sometimes embarrassing things she posts on social media.

“I don’t get embarrassed,” Reese clarified. “My children, however … But that’s their journey.”

She added, “I think you should embarrass them enough that they’re funny later in life.”

She also confessed that her kids don’t pay much attention to her career.

Reese may be a household name for her funny flicks. But one of her own children was unaware that she was in the business of humor until recently.

“I literally have my son tell me last night that he did not know I made a living being funny,” she told E! News in January. “He was like, ‘I just didn’t realize. You’re funny at home — sort of.'”

Typically, Reese’s kids don’t even watch her stuff.

During that same E! News interview, Reese made another surprising confession.

“My children actively avoid my work,” she said.

However, she noted that one of her sons saw her movie You’re Cordially Invited.

“He told me kids his age won’t want to go see it because we’re old,” Reese explained. “That’s what he said to me: ‘You’re old. But they’ll love it when they when they do watch it with their parents.'”
