When the disturbing allegations against Meghan Markle’s father, Thomas Markle Sr., came to light, Meghan noted that she now hopes the media outlets that targeted her can understand why she’s been estranged from him since 2018. People online have identified one person in particular who had relentlessly pushed Meghan to repair her relationship with her dad: Piers Morgan.
For years, Piers criticized Meghan for not speaking to her father. Now, people are calling him out for inserting himself into Meghan’s private life without understanding what was really going on.
In a previous column, Piers suggested that Meghan was less of a humanitarian because of the estrangement.
In 2018, in a column for the Daily Mail, Piers expressed sympathy for Thomas and publicly called on Meghan to reach out to him. He mentioned Thomas’ worsening health and suggested that it had been “exacerbated by feelings of extreme loneliness and sadness brought on by what appears to be sudden estrangement from Meghan.”
He wrote that Meghan couldn’t “bring herself to even talk to the man, let alone get on a plane to see how he is after his heart surgery.” Piers wrapped the column up with, “Meghan, I urge you to do the right thing and prove you really ARE a humanitarian by helping your dad in his hour of need – before it’s too late.”
These comments, along with many others, have resurfaced on Reddit, where many critics agree that Piers should mind his own business.
In the statement she shared after the allegations came to light, Meghan mentioned this harmful media narrative.

“I hope it can now be understood that, despite certain media publications’ distortion over the years, any distance from my father and my choice to not allow him to have contact with our children was for one reason: to protect them,” she said.
Knowing what we know now, people think Piers should be ashamed of the way he criticized Meghan for cutting off contact with her father.
“People should not interfere in family relationships,” one person wrote on Reddit. “Especially when they don’t understand the dynamics of those relationships. Morgan should be ashamed of himself. But he doesn’t seem the type to be introspective.”
“I’ve been watching a lot of videos of journalists now saying, ‘we didn’t know,'” someone else wrote. “As if it was ok to berate Meghan day after day over her not talking to her father because you didn’t have all of the facts.” And the fact that they didn’t know is precisely the point; they were making a lot of assumptions and pushing a narrative without having enough information.
“We don’t know what goes on behind the scenes in anyone else’s life so we should be very careful before we pass judgment,” another person added.
People also accused Piers of bullying and harassing Meghan.

Regardless of Meghan’s reason for being estranged from her father, it was never Piers’ business in the first place, they argued. “Why does he think he has the right to insert himself in her private life?” someone questioned. “Does he understand what boundaries are?”
And while Meghan was clearly already dealing with something so distressing, she also had to deal with the persistent media narrative that she was being selfish or uncaring toward her father. It’s hard to imagine how difficult that must’ve been for her. “Meghan also had the immense pressure of the media trying to force her to meet her father and she still chose to protect her family,” another person pointed out.
