Recent photos of John Goodman have shocked fans, who say they can hardly recognize him after his weight-loss transformation. Well, it sounds like John sort of feels the same way. He, too, is surprised when he sees photos of himself because he still hasn’t gotten used to the way he looks now, he revealed during a recent podcast appearance.
John’s weight loss journey started years ago, but he previously spoke about how hard it was for him to be consistent about it. “In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a 6-pack of bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits,” he previously admitted when speaking to ABC News. Eventually, he underwent stomach surgery and lost 200 pounds. He’s also spoken about lifestyle changes he’s made over the years.
The significant weight loss has been a major adjustment for him.

During a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, he admitted that he is still getting used to how he looks after his dramatic weight loss. “I’m still trying to get used to my face,” he revealed. “It’s weird. I think of myself as one way and then I look at myself, ‘Oh, wow!'”
He didn’t frame it as a bad thing, but noted that it’s definitely “strange.” At the same time, he said it’s “fun to get used to.”
The change has also come with some health consequences that he has to pay attention to.

Which means he’s still very focused on improving his health, even though he has lost a significant amount of weight. The 74-year-old actor revealed that he “turned anemic and lost a layer of fat under (his) skin” because of his weight loss, per The New Yorker. Additionally, he’s now finding that he’s “cold all the time.”
He’s now focused on building strength, especially after a recent injury. “Basically, building up the core, balance, strength training, stuff like that, so I don’t fall down,” John explained. “Which I did as soon as I got back to London from Christmas break. I came down parallel to the ground, on my hip, and fractured it.”
It sounds like he also felt somewhat self-conscious after his body changed.
And because he was worried about the way his body would look on screen, he tried to avoid doing a nude scene on Righteous Gemstones. “I thought I was going to have to be naked in it and I said, ‘I don’t know. My body’s too messed up losing all this weight.'”
At the same time, he doesn’t seem to pay much attention to people’s comments about his body. He has existed in the public eye for quite a while now, so he’s used to people offering their unsolicited opinions. For the most part, he’s able to “just ignore it.”
“Since I’m in this business, it is fair game, up to a point,” he said. Recently, the actor made headlines when Wizards of Waverly Place actor David DeLuise shared a photo of them together and fans were shocked to see how thin John looked. “Wild!!” one person wrote in the comments at the time. “Doesn’t even look like the same guy (from) 30 years ago.”
