Mary-Kate Olsen’s Divorce Is Already Taking An Ugly Turn Amid Reports Her Prenup Is ‘Iron-Clad’

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy enjoyed a private marriage over the last five years. It appears their split will play out much more publicly.

Fans of the couple were shocked to learn that Mary-Kate had filed for an emergency order to divorce Olivier in New York City. The request for an emergency order comes after Mary-Kate claims Olivier is asking her to get out of their New York City apartment by May 18 because he terminated their lease without her knowledge.

Mary-Kate has left New York to be with twin sister Ashley Olsen and friends somewhere outside the city as more details of the divorce began going public. It appears that the relationship between Mary-Kate and Olivier has been toxic for some time. Mary-Kate originally signed a petition to divorce in April, but she couldn't file it due to coronavirus court delays. A source claims that the split has "gotten ugly" between Mary-Kate and Olivier as she tries desperately to end the drama.

Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy are finding themselves at odds during their messy split. News of the demise of the couple's relationship came on May 13, when TMZ reported that Mary-Kate had filed an emergency court order to allow her to file for divorce.

Mary-Kate originally signed a petition for divorce on April 17. She was unable to file after learning the courts weren't accepting divorce filings as they grappled with COVID-19 related issues.

The emergency order request is due to the fact that Mary-Kate alleges Olivier's attorneys emailed her legal team requesting she get all of her things out of their New York City apartment by May 18. Mary-Kate believes Olivier terminated their lease without her knowledge.

"My husband has terminated the lease on our New York City residence … without my consent," the paperwork reads, according to Page Six.

"This application is an emergency because my husband expects me to move out of our home on Monday, May 18, 2020 in the middle of New York City being on pause due to COVID-19. I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."

Mary-Kate requested that she have until the end of the month to get her things out, but his attorneys failed to answer. A divorce petition would keep him from being able to get rid of the property, which is a marital asset. There are also other marital assets in the home she is concerned about.

Attorneys for Olivier claim that the 50-year-old French banker, who is worth reportedly $60 million, is "not in a position to extend it and/or pay additional rent."

In the documents that accompany the file, Mary-Kate also requests that the conditions of their prenuptial agreement be enforced. Mary-Kate shares a $500 million fortune with twin sister Ashley Olsen. A source close to Mary-Kate told Us Weekly that her prenup is "iron-clad."

"Her business interests and fortune are protected," the source noted.

Ashley was spotted in New York City on Wednesday morning, although sources believe that she and some friends will be joining Mary-Kate outside the city shortly. She's hoping to support her sister as Mary-Kate awaits a response from Olivier's attorneys.

"It's gotten very ugly between them," a source close to the 33-year-old fashion mogul told E! News of the former couple.

Mary-Kate reportedly hoped that the split could go down quietly and amicably, but that ship has sailed. The source describes it as a "heated divorce."

"She's done with constant drama," they add.

Mary-Kate and Olivier raised eyebrows when they began dating in 2012. The 17-year-age difference between the couple was a lot to stomach for some, with Olivier's ex-wife Charlotte Bernard describing the relationship as "grotesque" when news first emerged.

While Olivier reportedly wanted to propose 10 months into the relationship, Mary-Kate asked him not to. The two were together for three years before tying the knot in 2015.

The private couple's wedding made headlines despite their dedication to privacy. Guests at their 50-person wedding at a private residence in Manhattan were asked to turn in cellphones before entering. Still, word of the "bowls and bowls filled with cigarettes" that served as decor for the event leaked to the press.

Mary-Kate very briefly touched on what it was like to be both an industrious career woman and a wife and stepmom in a 2019 interview with Net-a-Porter.

"I think we're lucky [working hard] comes quite naturally for us. We don't need so much time to sit and think and ponder," Mary-Kate said of herself and Ashley, who still work together on fashion brands The Row and Elizabeth and James.

"But then I have a husband, two step-kids and a life; I have to go home and cook dinner," Mary-Kate continued.

"I ride horses on the weekends. You find the thing that helps you relax and if you don’t have it, you have to look for it. Or you get burned out and then you're not productive."

It will be interesting to see whether the two ultra-private parties continue to allow this thing to play out publicly. This divorce may take work, but that's one thing Mary-Kate has proven she's not afraid of.

Mary-Kate's comments about her work in fashion last year are oddly fitting for the situation at hand. "Nothing comes easy," she noted.

"That's just the way we were raised; that's what we believe is necessary to do something different."
