Grizzly murders, daring robberies, giant sea monsters, and a 500-year-old indecipherable book filled with bizarre illustrations. There are thousands upon thousands of mysterious and unsolved crimes that will most likely remain in that category until the end of time.
Maybe that's the reason we love crime shows so much: We like to see detectives on CSI or Columbo solve the impossible. But even these cases, so far, have been unsolvable!
It's hard to be able to sift through all the mysteries in history, but a few well-known — and quite creepy — cases always seem to come up whenever the subject is discussed.
Something about what we "don't know" always seems a lot more terrifying than what we do know. These mysteries all have unknown causes and answers, and they're so intriguing that we always find ourselves drawn to discussing these stories and attempting to come up with theories and explanations.
Please SHARE with your friends and make sure to tell us what you think the answers to any of these mysteries could be!
1. The Voynich Manuscript
Not much is known about this bizarre book. It was written sometime around the 15th Century.
There are about 240 pages, all of which are filled with an indecipherable language. American code-breakers from both World Wars have been unable to figure out what it means!
Along with the unknown language, it is filled with otherworldly illustrations. What do you think it could be?
Keep reading for the NEXT mystery!
2. D.B. Cooper's Flight
On November 24, 1971, Cooper hijacked a plane headed for Seattle. He demanded parachutes and $200,000 cash.
The plane landed and Cooper was actually given what he asked for. The plane took off again, but halfway through the flight he opened the door and jumped out.
Years later, some of the money was found, but it's still unclear if Cooper got away alive or not. He remains the only successful hijacker in U.S. history.
The next mystery is even STRANGER!
3. The Bloop
Back in 1997, an incredibly loud noise was detected in the Pacific Ocean. It was so loud that it was picked up by Navy Sound Surveillance thousands of miles away.
Due to the nature of the sound, many scientists theorized that whatever the "Bloop" was...was an organic living animal. A really big one.
There is an argument that the sound was just an "Ice Quake." But neither theory has been proven. What do you think?
The next mystery is honestly the scariest. What kind of person does something like that?
4. The Chicago Tylenol Murders
In 1982, seven Chicagoans died from cyanide poisoning.
It was discovered that some madman was taking bottles of Tylenol home, adding the poison to them, and then putting them back in the store.
Due to the deaths, "Safety Seals" were added to products, thereby ensuring that this terrible crime would not happen again. The culprit, however, was never caught.
The final mystery is a bit obvious, but I'm always drawn to her.
5. The Black Dahlia Murder
Warning: Graphic Image Below
Elizabeth Short's mutilated body was found abandoned in LA's Leimert Parkin in 1947.
Though dozens of men were suspects at one point or another, no one was ever found responsible for the terrible crime. Her unsolved murder has been the source of widespread speculation over the years.
May she rest in peace.
