Katy Perry Gets Honest About Her 14-Month Marriage With Russell Brand: ‘It Was Like A Tornado’

Katy Perry has a lot to celebrate right now. The singer and her fiancé, Orlando Bloom, recently welcomed their first child together, daughter Daisy. Katy also recently released her newest album and spent weeks preceding her daughter's birth engaged in a promotional tour.

One of her interviews was with 60 Minutes Australia, and Katy was asked about her 14-month-long marriage to comedian and actor Russell Brand. The two got married in 2010 and ended up divorcing a year later.

Katy shared that the time period was really busy and exciting for her professionally, but she definitely felt she was experiencing too much all at the same time. "I was having great success at 23, 24, and 25 and then I met someone that was interesting and stimulating. It was just like a tornado; it was everything happening at once."

She also said that even though things were a little chaotic, she really loved Russell. "He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him."

Their relationship came crashing to an end when Russell texted Katy on December 31, 2011, and told her that he planned to divorce her.

Katy met Orlando at a party in 2016, and the two reportedly hit it off immediately. She described their relationship as "a healthy frictional, very open, very communicative, nothing is swept under the mat type of relationship."

She added, "It's like, we should probably walk into the other room to discuss something where we disagree because we'll just do it in public. But I think if we can get to the ends of our lives together, we'll be each other's greatest teachers. Dating is different. Weekend lovers? That's fun; that's candy. This is solid. This is like the main course."

Katy and Russell got married in October 2010. Their reps released a joint statement that read:

"The very private and spiritual ceremony, attended by the couples' closest family and friends was performed by a Christian minister and longtime friend of the Hudson Family. The backdrop was the inspirational and majestic countryside of Northern India."

The pair met back in 2008, when Russell hosted the MTV Video Music Awards. They hit it off, but Katy wasn't single at the time. They met again the same award show the following year and were together from that point forward. Russell proposed on New Year's Eve in 2009 at a tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India. The pair got married at the same sanctuary in 2010.

In November 2011, Katy was asked if she wanted to have children with Russell, and she replied affirmatively: "I would love to have children. I think that's one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, 'Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent."

However, things went off the rails in the months that followed, and Katy and Russell parted ways.

Katy and Orlando met at a Golden Globes after-party in 2016, but they haven't always had the smoothest relationship. They broke up in 2017, only to reunite a few months later. Orlando proposed in 2019, and Katy announced that they were expecting their baby on March 4, 2020.

While the couple initially planned to go ahead with their wedding plans, they ended up postponing their celebration due to the ongoing health crisis. They haven't shared any wedding plans since that announcement, but they've been over the moon since their daughter was born.

The pair released a joint statement through UNICEF that reads:

"We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter. But we know we're the lucky ones and not everyone can have a birthing experience as peaceful as ours was. Communities around the world are still experiencing a shortage of healthcare workers and every eleven seconds a pregnant woman or newborn dies, mostly from preventable causes."

Both Katy and Orlando are goodwill ambassadors through the organization.

This is Katy's first child and Orlando's second. He shares his son, 9-year-old Flynn, with his ex-wife, Miranda Kerr. Both Orlando and Miranda have discussed their co-parenting relationship publicly, and the two appear to be doing everything they can to make sure that Flynn feels solid and loved by everyone in his life.

Since their divorce, Miranda has remarried. She has two other children, Hart and Myles, with her husband, Evan Spiegel. She told The Morning Show that Flynn loves being an older brother.

"He absolutely adores his little brother. They just light up, they light up when they see each other. It's so sweet to see that interaction and Flynn is a very hands-on, helpful big brother."
