An unfortunate side of life in the public eye is that you attract fans or haters who could use some mental help. This appears to be the case in a recent attack against Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen and his wife.
On Monday, March 13, 2023, Allen was attacked outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His wife, Lauren Monroe, witnessed it and tried to intervene, which led to her being assaulted, too. Both of the attacks were unprovoked.
Rick Allen is a beloved drummer who lost his arm in a car crash on New Year’s Eve 1984. He did not let that stop him from rocking out, creating a custom drum set. In the recent incident, Allen was smoking outside by the valets when 19-year-old Max Edward Hartley allegedly attacked him.
According to the police report, Hartley was watching Allen from behind a pole. He rushed at Allen full speed and knocked him to the ground. When Monroe tried to help, he did the same to her. He even dragged her by her hair when she tried to get away.

Hartley eventually ran away from the scene but was later arrested when he allegedly damaged cars nearby. He faces charges of battery, four counts of criminal mischief, and abusing an elderly or disabled adult. His motive is unknown at this time.
