Times are hard these days financially. Many wish that money actually could grow on trees. It does, however, on very rare occasions get tossed out of cars on freeways. At least, this was the case on April 11, 2023, on Interstate 5 in Eugene, Oregon.
Authorities got multiple calls that money was “floating” on the highway and went to investigate. Turns out that 38-year-old Colin Davis McCarthy was throwing it out of his car. The Oregon State Police asked him to stop because it was creating hazardous traffic conditions.
Oregon State Police Captain Kyle Kennedy confirmed the details of this story to Today. McCarthy’s money giveaway caused many cars to stop on the side of the road to hunt for $100 bills. Kennedy and his department became concerned that this was a "significant traffic hazard" and ordered McCarthy to stop.
“McCarthy was cooperative and agreed to stop leaving money on the roadway,” Kennedy said. No charges are being brought against him. Authorities did a “thorough job of gathering the loose money.” There is no need to drive to Oregon to make a quick buck.

In fact, Kennedy does not want the public to go looking for money. “OSP is urging the public to avoid the temptation to go looking for money along the highway,” he said. “These searches create a hazardous condition and put both the searchers and motorists at risk.”
McCarthy claims to have thrown $200,000 out his window because he wanted to give it to the public.
“However, there wasn’t really a way to confirm how much money was ‘gifted,’” Kennedy retorted.
