On November 13, 2022, four families' lives were forever changed. Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Maddie Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20 were stabbed to death in their off campus house near the University of Idaho. On December 30, 2022, Bryan Kohberger was arrested and charged with the crimes.
Kaylee’s father Steve Goncalves recently spoke to NBC News about the prosecutor's decision to pursue the death penalty against Kohberger. He is relieved they are doing so and eager to get justice for his daughter and her friends. He will continue to fight to honor her memory.
"I’m glad that we’re in a situation of strength and the evidence is there and we feel that we can, they can go forward with this," Steve stated. Since learning of his daughter’s death, he has been going through the unimaginable. It is truly every father’s worst nightmare.
The family’s lawyer, Shanon Gray, also believes the prosecution made the right decision. To him, it was a no-brainer. "If you’re not going to pursue the guy for a death penalty on a case like this, who are you going to pursue for death penalty?" he wondered.

Kohberger was arraigned last month. For unknown reasons, he chose not to speak at the proceedings. Instead, the judge was forced to enter a not-guilty plea on his behalf. This is called “standing silent.” A scheduled June 27 pretrial hearing was canceled, but the trial is set to start on October 2.
