What kind of person are you? Do you believe in the importance of tipping your bartenders and servers? Or do you not feel tied to the responsibility of such? Our world is a mixture of both sides, and one bartender's TikTok just might be a call to action in showing why tipping our servers is important.
Aaliyah Cortez posted a video to TikTok that has racked up over 965,000 views. But the reason behind that number of views is honestly quite disheartening.
"This is why you should always tip your bartenders, servers, anyone who waits on you or provides a service for you," she starts off. She then goes on to explain why.
Pointing at her check, she says, "This is my hourly for 2 weeks. I worked almost 71 hours. I get paid $2.13 an hour as a bartender and a server."
"I should have made $150.81," she continues. "But because I have to have social security, Medicare, and the income tax taken out, I was paid $9.28 for 70 hours of work." Yep, you heard her right. Nearly *$10 *for around 70 hours. That's … insane.
"Of course I got tips, but this is what I got from my hourly," she concludes. "This is why you tip."
Aaliyah has worked at that bar for over a year. And to be getting paid such a small amount for such long hours of labor feels almost … indecent.
Users agreed in the comments section.
"No mam, your bar/restaurant is getting free labor and that's not ok," one person stated.
"This is why the US should be like EVERY other developed nation and not have a tip culture," another person commented. "Businesses should pay your wages. Tips shouldn't be a thing."
And other users commented on their own tip culture.
"Tips should not be expected," one person backlashed, while another shared, "I always tip 20%. If I can’t afford 20% I don’t go to a restaurant. ♀️."
So what do you think? Should people tip their servers, or is it not their responsibility?
