A zoo in China is facing allegations that humans are dressing up as sun bears as part of the zoo's exhibit. Visitors to the zoo began circulating images and videos that appear to show a bear standing fully erect, which is unusual behavior for the species.
The Hangzhou Zoo took to Facebook to defend its bears. In a post written from the bear's point of view, the zoo explained, "Some people think I stand like a person. It seems you don’t understand me very well."
The Hangzhou Daily reported that visitors sparked the rumors after the bears were captured standing suspiciously. The paper wrote, "Because of the way they stand, some people online question whether they are 'humans in disguise.'"
HuffPost explains that sun bears are typically the size of large dogs.
Other zoos in China have been accused of similarly suspicious behavior, such as passing "off dogs dyed to look like wolves or African cats, and donkeys painted to look like zebras."
