On February 5, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III was diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer. It was discovered when he underwent a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate. Officials did clarify that it is not prostate cancer and Charles had begun treatment on the same day as the announcement.
On Saturday, February 10, Charles spoke out for the first time since the announcement. He expressed his gratitude for all the well wishes and support he has received. He is thankful to the many organizations that help fight this horrible disease.
“I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days,” Charles’ statement began. “As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.”
“It is equally heartening to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world. My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience,” the statement concluded.

Charles has stepped back from public-facing royal duties while receiving treatment. He will continue to work behind the scenes. As of now no Counsellors of State will be appointed and Prince William will not act as regent. It is believed that Prince William will stand in for his father as will Queen Camilla and other members of the royal family.
