Sometimes, crappy situations can have a silver lining. A scary health diagnosis can lead to a family reconciling. This might be the case for the British royal family.
On Monday, February 5, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer. He began treatment that same day. Despite their estrangement, Prince Harry is expected to make a trip home to England to be with his dad during this difficult time.
The trip is happening sooner than later. It is believed the Duke of Sussex will travel in the next couple of days. He isn’t wasting any time.
King Charles told Harry the news personally. He did not staff this matter out. He had the same talk with Prince William. Charles also personally spoke with his three siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward.

This trip isn’t the first time Harry has returned home. He attended King Charles’ coronation in May 2023. In September 2023 he also participated in the WellChild Awards. Both of these trips were done solo because of security concerns. Prince Harry and his family no longer have the same level of protection now that they are not working royals.
Charles’ cancer was discovered during a corrective procedure for an enlarged prostate. "During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," the palace’s statement explained. Although the exact type of cancer was not specified, it was stated that it is not prostate cancer.
King Charles will pare down his workload during treatment. "His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual," the statement continued.
Charles is grateful to his medical team and remains positive. He is anxious to get back to full health and duties. "His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” the statement concluded.
Charles was last seen in public attending church at St. Mary Magdalene Church near Sandringham on February 4. Queen Camilla is expected to maintain a full schedule during Charles’ treatments. Prince William will return to work as well after taking some time off to help Kate Middleton recover from her abdominal surgery.
