Caitlyn Jenner, who is a trans woman, took to social media on March 30 to complain about President Joe Biden's recognition of Transgender Day of Visibility because it fell on the same day as Easter in 2024. Transgender Day of Visibility has been celebrated for 15 years, and it has been celebrated on March 31 every year. Biden first issued a proclamation in support of Transgender Day Of Visibility in 2021, and has done so every year since then — but he did not invent the celebration. However, Caitlyn took the proclamation as an opportunity to criticize the president.
"I am absolutely disgusted that Joe Biden has declared the most Holy of Holy days – a self proclaimed devout Catholic – as Transgender Day of Visibility," she wrote on X. "The only thing you should be declaring on this day is ‘HE is Risen.’"
Social media users were quick to point out the flaws in Caitlyn's statement, which she also shared on Instagram. For one, though Biden has supported Transgender Day of Visibility throughout his presidency, he did not select the day that it's celebrated on — it's the same each year.
"Trans day of visibility was always March 31st. Easter is the holiday that is different every year," one person commented on Caitlyn's Instagram post. "It’s not like he made the holiday up and was like yes let’s celebrate on Easter "
Other social media users found proof that Caitlyn previously celebrated Transgender Day of Visibility. On March 31, 2017, Caitlyn shared a photo on X and wrote, "#TransDayOfVisibility There's no better visibility than with sisters by my side."

Some social media users also reminded Caitlyn that she is trans.
"Do you… do you know that you’re trans?" one person wrote on Instagram.
"I am disgusted that you represent the trans community," another person commented. "You really have the platform and privilege to spread positivity and and love towards the trans community but you would rather spread ignorance to feed the hatred that millions of trans people are already experiencing."
Though Transgender Day of Visibility always falls on March 31, Caitlyn wasn't the only person who complained about it being celebrated on the same day as Easter in 2024.
The Trump campaign also released a statement, criticizing Biden for supporting Transgender Day of Visibility.
In the statement, the Trump campaign said that Biden's support of Transgender Day of Visibility was proof of Biden's "years-long assault on the Christian faith."
(Biden is Catholic and also released a statement for Easter).
"Jill and I send our warmest wishes to Christians around the world celebrating Easter Sunday. Easter reminds us of the power of hope and the promise of Christ’s Resurrection," Biden said in his statement.
The Trump campaign stated that Biden should "issue an apology to the millions of Catholics and Christians across America who believe tomorrow is for one celebration only — the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
Biden attends Mass on a regular basis and considers Catholicism to be an important aspect of his identity.
GLAAD, an organization dedicated to LGBTQ advocacy, took to X to remind people that Transgender Day of Visibility falls on the same day every year, while Easter does not.
"Fact Check: Easter changes dates each year and Trans Day of Visibility always falls on March 31. Anyone who says anything different is sadly overshadowing the hope and joy that Easter represents," the organization posted on X.
In a statement, Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD president and CEO, added that "this year right-wing politicians and talking heads are using the coincidental timing to overshadow the hope and joy that Easter represents," as per the Associated Press.
