Kate Hudson is the daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson. Her parents divorced in 1980. Kate was just 18 months old at the time. Bill was absent from most of her childhood. Goldie's partner, Kurt Russell, came into the picture two years after her parents' split and filled the void.
Kate appeared on CBS Sunday Mornings on April 28, 2024, and shared an update about the status of her relationship with her father. They don’t really have a relationship, but things are not completely frigid between the two of them. Kate has recently been talking to her half siblings from Bill’s side as well.
"I don't really have one," Kate replied when asked about her relationship with Bill. "It's warming up.”
Kate accepts things as they are. It’s messy and doesn’t have a clear definition. "There's warming up with this all happening. But it'll be whatever it will be, you know," she went on to say. "I have — I have no expectation of that with my father, you know. I just want him to be happy."

Even though they don’t have much of a relationship, Kate is following in her father’s footsteps. She is releasing an album, Glorious on May 17. Bill was a member of the '70s rock band, The Hudson Brothers.
Kate admits she might get her musical talent from her dad. "Those Hudson Brothers are crazy talented musicians and wonderful songwriters. My dad's a great songwriter," she said.
Kate and her brother Oliver, who is also Bill’s son, host a podcast called Sibling Revelry on which they often open up about their complicated family. Bill has three other children besides Kate and Oliver. In a January 2024 episode, Benji and Joel Madden gave Kate and Oliver some sage advice. They believe "gotta salvage what you can" even when coming from a broken home. "It doesn't always have to feel broken," the rocker brothers urged.
This led Kate to agree and reveal that she is working on developing a relationship with her half siblings. "I had this moment last year where I was like, 'I don't know why I don't talk to my other siblings,'” she shared “I don't care what the history is with our parents, but like — and especially me who has no sisters, right? And I do," she said. "I have two sisters that I don't speak to for no other reason except that our family separated."
There is no handbook for this sort of thing. They are figuring it out together as they go. "My sister and I and my brother, we've all just started communicating again," Kate went on to say. "And honestly, I got on the phone with my sister and we just started bawling our eyes out. It was so great. It was so great. She even said it, 'We start now. Just start now.'"
