It Took A Whole Year For Sinéad O’Connor’s Cause Of Death To Be Released

One year after singer Sinéad O'Connor died, on July 26, 2023, we finally have more information about what happened that led to her unexpected death at the age of 56. A coroner had originally had said that she had died of "natural causes," now that her complete death certificate has been released, more details have been shared about her health at the time she died, including the exact cause of her death.

As The New York Times reported, Sinéad's death certificate was registered by her first husband, John Reynolds, in late July 2024, attributing her death to "exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low-grade lower respiratory-tract infection."

According to People, the Irish Independent also reported that coroner Julian Morris certified her death.

In July 2023, a spokesperson for London's police headquarters, Scotland Yard, confirmed that her death was "not being treated as suspicious."

The last update on Sinéad's passing came in July, when the London Inner South Coroner's Court released a statement revealing that the singer had died of "natural causes" and that they had ceased their involvement in their investigation.

Sinéad was found unresponsive in a home in London in 2023, with her family confirming the news in a statement.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time," said the statement released to the BBC.

Sinéad left behind three children: Jake, Roisin, and Yeshua. She also had another son, Shane, who died by suicide in January 2022 at the age of 17.
