Although Rachael Ray loves working and had a successful career in television for many years, she recently admitted that she struggles with being in the spotlight. The iconic cookbook author and television personality launched her new podcast in October. Titled I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead, the podcast was promoted as a “no topic off-limits” podcast featuring “raw, honest stories.”
During the most recent episode of her podcast, Rachael Ray sat down with actor Jeremy Sisto to talk to him about his career. At the same time, she opened up about some of the more challenging aspects of her own career. The Food Network television personality admitted that being “noticed” has always been hard for her.
“I’ve been working in kitchens off the books since I was 12,” Rachael said on the podcast. “But since I was on my mom’s hip when I was 2 or 3, I always feel better after a day’s work, whether it was on someone’s hip or standing next to them or washing dishes. I always felt good about myself if I knew I contributed in some way that day, and I learned something that day.”

Although she enjoys feeling productive, she doesn’t always enjoy the attention she gets from it. “It’s always been very hard for me to be noticed, which is weird, but to make TV or go to public things has always been very, very challenging to me and the toughest part of it,” Rachael admitted.
Additionally, Rachael “can’t handle” watching herself on TV or in videos. “I don’t like watching myself at all. It makes me very, very nervous and self-conscious and I can’t handle it,” she admitted.
Recently, several videos that Rachael shared on Instagram have garnered a lot of negative attention. After seeing a video Rachael shared in September, some fans insisted that Rachael was slurring her words, leading them to speculate about her health. Other fans noticed that Rachael looked different in her more recent videos, with some claiming that they “didn’t even recognize her.”
Even though Rachael finds being in the limelight challenging, she truly loves to work. “I mean, I really love it,” she said on the podcast. “I like to write at 4 o’clock in the morning. I like to work as long as we need to to make something feel fun and right and I like to stand up for myself.”
