Jamie Lee Curtis Shares Secret To Staying Married For 40 Years To Christopher Guest

The fact that Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest have been married for 40 years is surprising to the Freaky Friday actress. When the couple tied the knot nearly 40 years ago, they had only known each other for a few months. On December 18, 2024, they will celebrate 40 years of marriage — which is hard for Jamie to believe, she admitted while on the Today show.

“Look at me: I’m like the most immature — ask your crew, I’m like the most immature guest you’ve ever had,” Jamie said on Today on December 12. “So how is it possible that I am married 40 years? I don’t understand it.” However, as she thought about her marriage more, she realized that humor plays a significant role.

“He still makes me laugh more than any human being and I’m sure there’s something about me that he likes,” Jamie said of her husband. Additionally, cohost Hoda Kotb asked Jamie if she feels like she and her husband “keep growing together” over time.

“You know what, it is that,” the Everything Everywhere All at Once actress realized. “Ultimately, Chris wasn’t a director when I married him, I wasn’t a writer.”

“Chris wasn’t a producer when I married him, I wasn’t a producer when he married me,” she continued. “We have grown into these new jobs that we’ve done.”

In September, Jamie spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her long-lasting marriage. Surprisingly, “a really good dose of hatred” was on her list of qualities that make a marriage successful, along with “perseverance, patience and gentleness.”

Admittedly, “you’re going to hate each other” sometimes, she explained. The secret, she said, is “not allowing that hatred to then cause you to make some choice that you’re gonna regret.”

She also shared a phrase that has had an impact on her marriage. “I’m also sober for a long time. And we have a phrase in recovery: ‘If you stay on the bus, the scenery will change,'” she told Entertainment Tonight. “And, you know, that’s marriage.”

“You stay on the bus, the scenery changes. Like, all of a sudden, you literally wanna hate each other, and then the next day, it’s a pretty, sunny day,” Jamie explained. “And the dog does something cute. And your child does something cute. And you look at each other, and you’re like, ‘Aw, gosh.’ And then you’re on another track.”
