What to Know
Activist Greta Thunberg is concerned that people are not worried enough about the things President Donald Trump has been saying. On Easter Sunday, he took to social media to threaten Iran. By Tuesday, his threats had escalated. He wrote, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.”
This threat did make headlines. However, Greta clearly thought the issue was not getting enough attention or sparking enough outrage. According to her, people should be taking Trump’s threat very, very seriously—and it doesn’t really seem like they are.
In an Instagram video, Greta expressed concerns about what people have “normalized.”
The 23-year-old Swedish activist said, “The President of the United States just said that a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again and no one is reacting. This speaks for itself. What the f— is anyone even doing at this point?”
She added, “We have normalized genocide, total annihilation of entire people, the systematic destruction of the biosphere which we are all depending on to survive, and that corrupt, racist war criminals can act with complete impunity.”
At the same time, she suggested that it’s not completely hopeless. “But even though we have allowed far too much so far, it is not too late to say stop,” she continued. “If we don’t, we shouldn’t f—ing be able to call ourselves human.”
She shared the video before Trump announced a two-week ceasefire.
On the same day that Trump announced the ceasefire, he took to Truth Social to threaten, “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again. I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS?”
He continued, “We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”
The post sparked concerns, but Greta isn’t the only person who thought people weren’t concerned enough.
People reacted to Greta’s response.

The video was shared on Reddit, and some people said that the people around them really are worried about Trump’s rhetoric. At the same time, others argued that people do not seem to be reacting appropriately. “She’s not wrong. I can’t find anyone in real life who is even worried?? Like, this happens every day or something. It’s terrifying,” one person wrote.
Someone else said, “She is vocalizing what I’ve been thinking. Why is nobody reacting appropriately to this. We cannot be this far gone, I refuse to believe that.” Others have noticed that people do seem kind of apathetic, perhaps because they’re not paying attention, because it’s not happening to them directly, or because Trump’s rhetoric has been normalized. Many people are worried, some argued, but they’re also used to Trump saying scary or unhinged things on a regular basis. “I know a lot of people who are worried, but I also know a lot of people who figure it’s just the latest thing in his chaos cycle and nothing will happen,” one person wrote.
Several people pointed out that there are many people who do care, but they also don’t know what they can do about it, unfortunately. Many were tempted to blame politicians rather than ordinary Americans. “My heart is heavy today as there is nothing I can do but sit here angrily that nobody in the position to do something, will actually do something,” someone wrote.
