What to Know
When President Donald Trump was asked whether he would be attending his son Donald Trump Jr.’s wedding, he acted like he had more important things to do. But, days later, he announced that he plans on attending a basketball game. Interesting. Many critics already believed Trump was just making excuses when trying to explain why he wouldn’t attend his son’s wedding ceremony, and this new development isn’t helping.
On Wednesday, May 27, the president said he will probably go to an NBA Finals game. “I think I’ll be going to one of the games,” he told reporters, per ESPN. “I was invited by numerous people, and (New York Knicks owner James Dolan), and I think I’ll be going.”
Now, New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s press office is mocking Don Jr. because of this. The spat between Don Jr. and Hochul started when a reporter asked the governor about Trump’s comments about basketball.
Governor Hochul was asked about Trump’s claim that he is a lifelong Knicks fan.

And she seemed skeptical. However, she also made a mistake when answering the question. “I’d ask him to name the starting lineup from the 1993 championship team and see how he does,” she told reporters. The Knicks didn’t actually win the championship that year, though. She might’ve been referring to when the Knicks won the championship in 1973.
For some reason, Don Jr. swooped in to defend his dad, even after he skipped his wedding.
Anyone who knows my father knows he probably knows more about Sports than just about any human being not in the business. Kathy’s failed soundbite ain’t gonna land well… just like her policies. https://t.co/VFQlLW2Rsx

Don Jr. and socialite Bettina Anderson tied the knot on May 21. Just days after his dad missed the ceremony because he had “a thing called Iran and other things,” Don Jr. took to X to criticize Hochul and defend his father. Hochul’s comment really seemed to bother him. He re-shared the clip and added his own caption. According to him, his dad is an expert on “Sports” (it’s unclear why sports was capitalized in his post).
“Anyone who knows my father knows he probably knows more about Sports than just about any human being not in the business,” he wrote in his dad’s defense. “Kathy’s failed soundbite ain’t gonna land well… just like her policies.”
But people, including Hochul’s press team, mocked him for defending his dad.
Crazy he has time to go a basketball game but not your wedding 😭 https://t.co/pbbaJZqCnj

In response to Don Jr.’s post, Hochul’s press team wrote, “Crazy he has time to go a basketball game but not your wedding 😭”
And although a lot of people are tired of politicians trolling each other on social media, many found this particular comment pretty hilarious. “That’s gonna sting,” one person wrote in response. “Alright this is actually pretty good,” someone else commented.
Initially, when asked about whether he planned on attending his son’s wedding, Trump admitted that his son wanted him there. However, it didn’t sound especially important to him. “It’s going to be just a small little private affair and I’m going to try and make it,” he said. “I said, ‘You know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things.'”
He later took to social media to say that, because of “circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America,” he would not attend the ceremony. Apparently, “circumstances pertaining to Government” and “Iran and other things” won’t stop him from attending a basketball game, though.
