Prior to President Donald Trump becoming president, most people would generally expect politicians to conduct themselves with some level of professionalism online. But during Trump’s second term, people have noticed that politics has been “memeified” like never before.
Trump has obviously raised concerns with his social media habits on many occasions, whether it’s because his posts are totally unserious, outright offensive, authoritarian-sounding, or some combination of the three. The official White House account and other Trump administration officials have come under fire for the same reason.
Right now, it’s a post from the official Department of Homeland Security X account that’s really causing a stir and creeping people out.
The account shared an image of Trump and a question about loyalty.

On Monday, August 24, the DHS account shared an image of Trump standing under an umbrella. There were four words written over the image: “Did you remain loyal?”
People were confused about whom the account was addressing with this post (Everyone? Specific people?) Regardless, many were disgusted by it. Even some commenters who said they voted for Trump responded to the account and said the post was completely inappropriate.
The account posted the image in response to a right-wing political commentator.

Right-wing political commentator Christian Heiens had shared a screenshot of a series of posts shared by Insider Wire. One of the captions read, “The Supreme Court allows Trump’s mail-in ballot restrictions to take effect.” Another post read, “The Trump admin to revoke the visas of up to 200, 000 asylum seekers.” There were several others, which prompted Heiens to write, “It’s just a series of generational wins after another.”
And that is what led to the DHS post about loyalty, for some reason.

They called the post “frightening,” “unAmerican,” and “in poor taste.” And although the Trump administration has sparked backlash on social media many times before, some critics argued that this post was among the worst ones they’ve seen.
“This is one of the most unAmerican and frightening posts by an American governmental agency EVER,” one commenter said.
Someone else wrote, “An official U.S. government account posting the president’s face with ‘DID YOU REMAIN LOYAL?’ is genuinely deranged. DHS is not supposed to operate as a personal fan account or run meme-format loyalty tests for one politician.”
“No American should ever be asked if they’ve remained loyal to a politician who was elected to represent and serve us, especially from official government accounts,” a third person argued.
People also questioned whether the post was meant to threaten or intimidate.

“Is this meant as a threat to our f—ing SCOTUS or other courts who might rule against this President?” someone questioned in the comments.
Others assumed that the question was directed at a broader audience (it was shared publicly, after all). “A man with zero loyalty to the United States or its constitution is asking if U.S. citizens are loyal to him? Are we in a tv show?” another commenter asked.
Additionally, people pondered over what the DHS seemed to be asking everyone to be loyal to. “Loyal to the Constitution and the law?” a third person wondered. “…or loyal to a corrupt President?”
