Jeff Bezos’ Tribute To Dolly Parton Sparks A Debate About What Rich People Should Do With Their Money

Heartfelt tributes to Dolly Parton came pouring in after her death on August 25. Many people praised her for her kindness and generosity, as she was also a dedicated philanthropist who used her wealth and influence to help people.

So, when Jeff Bezos shared a tribute to the country icon, critics suggested that he could certainly afford to be more like Dolly. Like many others, Jeff specifically mentioned Dolly’s generosity in the message he wrote. And while people didn’t disagree with the kind things he said about Dolly, they roasted him in the comments and urged him to “take notes.”

Jeff shared a photo that showed him seated next to Dolly in 2022.

That year, he presented her with the Bezos Courage and Civility Award. As a recipient of this award, Dolly received $100 million to give away to causes of her choosing. At the time, she wrote, “I try to put my money where my heart is. I will do my best to do good things with this money.”

In his Instagram post dedicated to Dolly, Jeff praised the late country star for her love and kindness. “Dolly spent her whole life showing us what it means to lead with love,” he wrote. “Lauren (Sánchez) and I are so grateful to have known her. She lifted everyone with her music, her generosity, and her joy. Sending our sincere condolences to her family and everyone she touched.”

Commenters didn’t disagree with the message, but they found it just a tad bit ironic.

After Dolly’s death, many fans noted that she, too, could’ve been a billionaire if she had hoarded her wealth. Obviously, that’s not what she did. She gave so much of her money away, supporting a wide range of causes including disaster relief, childhood literacy, medical research, education, and wildlife conservation. To many of her fans, this is the right way to be rich — and billionaires like Jeff should be taking notes.

According to the World’s Billionaires List published by Forbes in 2026, Jeff is the fourth richest person in the world and has a net worth of $224 billion.

So, when he posted about Dolly, people left comments like, “You could learn a thing or two from her” and “You could do so much good with your wealth. Be like Dolly.” Some took it a step further and urged everyone to “be a Dolly NOT a Jeff!!”

They also questioned when he planned on showing his generosity, if it’s a trait that he values.

“So are you going to dedicate your life to kindness and generosity like Dolly did?” someone questioned in the comments. “If you like her that much, do what (she) did!!!!!” another person advised. “Give back to your community and pay decent wages to your employees!!!!!”

But based on his actual behavior, a lot of critics assumed that he hasn’t been taking notes. After all, Jeff could easily donate his money and still have plenty left over. “So please do what she did and donate yourself out of being a billionaire,” one critic advised.

“She was such a positive force because of her generosity and compassion towards humanity,” a fourth person wrote. “I recommend following in her footsteps, you can make the world a better place just like Dolly if you make the conscious choice to.”

Although people had nothing bad to say about his Instagram post specifically, they argued that he could be doing a lot more to honor Dolly. “At the VERY least, you should do something in her honour – you of all people can afford to,” someone else said.

And until then, some people were not all that interested in hearing what he had to say about generosity. “lol dolly actually did good things with her money,” one critic pointed out. “Start by giving away enough money that you’re no longer a billionaire and then we’ll talk.”
