When a child misses school, it's usually for a pretty common reason, like they're sick and had to stay home.
Or at least, that is what is commonly believed. While there are other reasons for children to stay home from school some days, you'd never think it's because of their clothing.
One St. Louis principal learned that is actually a very real problem that was plaguing her students.
When Dr. Melody Gunn walked into her school to find many of her students missing, rather than grow angry, she became concerned. Where were her students?
She decided to go door-to-door to find out where everyone was. When she started asking questions, she was completely shocked by the answers.
Many students missed school because they didn't have clean clothes. They were embarrassed to go out in the clothing they'd worn the day before, so they stayed home.
This didn't sit well with Melody, so she devised a plan to help her students and make sure everyone was back in school. She contacted Whirlpool and told them the situation. The company was happy to help.
Whirlpool sent a washer and dryer to the school and Melody let her students know that they were to bring the dirty clothes that their parents could not wash in a bag and the school would take care of it!
