As winter rolls around, ice and icy surfaces are nightmares everyone dreads. From black ice while driving to the terrifying scenario of falling through thin ice, emergency services are trained in handling all the dangers ice can bring.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department dealt with a very scary moment on December 3 when two dogs fell through the ice of a frozen lake in a park.
According to local news, a witness saw a black Lab and a black-and-white spotted border collie walking across the ice 50 feet from the shore. Without their owner in sight, they seemed to be just strolling across the ice with ease until one fell through and struggled to swim to the surface.
Thankfully, a Good Samaritan immediately phoned emergency services after one of the dogs fell through, and could be the reason the dogs were saved so swiftly.
The fire department arrived on the scene wearing full diving gear to save the dogs. Very quickly, one rescue worker pulled the dogs to safety while tied to a line with the assistance of another firefighter.
The CSFD shared video of the rescue on Twitter, showing the black Lab being taken to safety.
The dogs are now safe and in the custody of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, since they were found not wearing any collars. So far, police do not know the identity of the dogs' owner or owners.
