Dolly Parton, the iconic singer-songwriter known for her distinctive voice, larger-than-life personality, and enduring contributions to country music, has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Her career has spanned over six decades, and her impact on the music industry is immeasurable.
Not too long ago, a remarkable piece of history was unearthed that takes us back in time to witness the early talent and youthful charm of the young Dolly performing in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee. This footage was taken 60 years ago!
Archivist Bradley Reeves got his hands on footage that was taken with an old Super 8 movie camera by Haroldine Worthington from Fountain City. This was around the time that Dolly was just starting out. If you didn't know that this footage was of her, you wouldn't have guessed it was Dolly at all.
Dolly's appearance was different from what we are accustomed to seeing. Instead of the usual bright blond hair and flashy outfits, her hair was almost light brown and pulled back into an updo. And she wore a simple green dress with a cute white collar on it.
Dolly was performing at the well-known gas station, Alvin Frye, where they were having a live WVIK performance that was being radio broadcasted. Along with her, many well-known bluegrass performers were also there, like Little Robert and Gloria Belle.

We even get to hear the sound from that old video footage and let me just say, there was no question, even at 14 years old, that Dolly was going to be big one day. Her voice sounded beautiful, and almost exactly how she sounds now. There are about four or five minutes of full footage of the broadcast that is able to be seen and heard.
Watching this rare video is like taking a step back in time to witness the birth of a legend. Dolly’s performance exudes an authenticity that is often missing in today’s highly produced music. The video not only showcases Dolly’s extraordinary vocal talent but also provides a glimpse into the rich musical culture of Knoxville.
