30 Rarely Seen Photographs Of Prince Philip With His Royal Family

Prince Philip may have been known as a member of the British royal family; however, he was actually born into two other royal families. According to Britannica, his father was Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, the son of King George I of the Hellenes, while his mother was Princess Alice of Battenberg. Welcomed into the world on the Greek island of Corfu on June 10, 1921, Philip as an infant can be seen in this photo with his mother, who was a relative of Queen Victoria.

During his lifetime, Prince Philip was a son, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather. He was also a brother. According to Biography, he had four older sisters, who were named Cecilie, Sophie, Margarita, and Theodora. This picture is reported to be Philip with his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, and three of his siblings.

Prince Philip's wife, Queen Elizabeth II, famously adores corgis. However, in this picture of Prince Philip as a child, he sits with his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, who appears to be holding a dachshund who we have to assume was a beloved family pet. Later, Elizabeth and Philip opted for a dog that was a mix of both beloved breeds when they found themselves with a dachshund-corgi cross, per Wamiz UK.

While Prince Philip has always been a royal, his life changed on November 20, 1947, when he married Princess Elizabeth, the woman who would go on to become the queen of England. On the occasion of their wedding, Philip posed with his new bride along with their royal wedding party in this color photo, which also features the youngest bridesmaid, Elizabeth's cousin, 9-year-old Princess Alexandra, who went on to become The Honourable Lady Ogilvy.

Queen Elizabeth's father, King George VI, died on February 6, 1952, which meant that he wasn't able to walk his younger daughter, Princess Margaret, down the aisle when she got married on May 6, 1960. That's why Prince Philip stepped in to give his sister-in-law away.

Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth went on to have four children: Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward. Around 1951, the royal parents posed with their two eldest children — including baby Anne, who is seen reaching out for her father's face — in this photo, which was colorized from the original to bring it new life.

In 1964, the British royal family sent out a holiday card that featured a photo of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth with their children. Philip, Charles, and Anne appear to be looking at Edward, who is a baby in his mother's arms. A note with the photo reads, "With best wishes for Christmas and the New Year" and is signed Elizabeth R, which is the Queen's royal signature.

Prince Philip didn't only pose for formal pictures with his family. He was also snapped in this casual photo of Philip, Elizabeth, and their children walking around the gardens of Windsor Castle, with the youngest member of the family being pushed in a stroller. It was featured on a postcard that was apparently sent out on April 20 back in 1966.

Back in February 1969, following Frank Bowman's Apollo mission, the astronaut paid a visit to Buckingham Palace with his wife, according to Town & Country. That's when he met Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth as well as two of their children, Prince Edward and Princess Anne.

Prince Philip may have sometimes seemed like a formal royal, but he still knew how to have fun. The Clarence House Instagram account — which is the IG of Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla, The Duchess of Cornwall — shared a photo of Prince Philip and his eldest son "play[ing] polo in 1966."

Even when Prince Philip was in military uniform, he occasionally showed signs of seeing the lighter side of the situation. That seemed to be what he was doing in this photo of himself smiling with his son, Prince Charles, who was also in uniform.

In November 1973, Princess Anne married Captain Mark Phillips. Her father, Prince Philip, was there to walk her down the aisle, just like he did for his sister-in-law, Princess Margaret. Following Prince Philip's death in April 2021, the British royal family shared a photo of the Duke of Edinburgh with his daughter, Princess Anne. She shared a message, writing, "You know it’s going to happen but you are never really ready. My father has been my teacher, my supporter, and my critic, but mostly it is his example of a life well lived and service freely given that I most wanted to emulate."

All wore kilts aside from Queen Elizabeth, who wore a dress.

As Prince Philip's grandchildren continued to get older, he seemed to remain eager to spend time with them.
