Anna Faris Responds To Chuck Lorre’s Harsh Memoir Comments About Her Time On ‘Mom’

In his new memoir, Chuck Lorre wrote that he was initially skeptical about hiring actress Anna Faris for her role in Mom. Ultimately, he concluded that the doubts he had about her were correct, which… ouch. Can you imagine?

Of course, existing in the public eye often comes with dealing with an onslaught of speculation and criticism, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to deal with or that it never hurts. Besides, this criticism came from someone Anna actually knows, so it’s not hard to understand why it might hurt her. And after the release of Chuck’s memoir, she admitted that it really did.

She actually took to social media to share her thoughts.

Anna appeared on Mom, a show about a single mom in recovery, from 2013 to 2020. She left the show prior to its final season. In his new memoir, Sitcom, Chuck wrote that he initially thought Anna wasn’t the right actress for the show. After thinking about it for some time, he decided to push past his initial concerns—before ultimately concluding that he had been right about Anna from the very beginning.

Chuck suggested that Anna’s personal struggles with the topic addressed on the show made her less of a fit for the role. In an Instagram post, Anna admitted that she “was on a show about recovery and then I lived it.”

Anna was clearly surprised by what Chuck wrote about her in his book.

She started her post with, “Yikes. Yes, I read a few things. I really didn’t see that coming. Of course it hurts.” Then, she went on to say that she really loved working on Mom, and yes, she has personal experience with the subject matter, which she believes serves as “proof” to others that “it gets better.”

“Chuck gave me a job I loved, and for seven years I never took a day of it for granted,” she wrote. “I’m proud of what we made together, and nothing changes how grateful I am for those people and those years.”

She then opened up about her own sobriety journey, which she had previously talked about during an appearance on the Dear Chelsea podcast.

“I’ve been sober for a year and a half,” she wrote. “I was on a show about recovery and then I lived it. Now I’m healthy, I’m working, and I’m happier than I’ve been in a long time. If anyone reading this is where I was, I hope that’s useful. It gets better. I’m proof.”

While on the Dear Chelsea podcast, she talked about how giving up alcohol improved her mental health. “Turns out there’s a correlation between drinking and depression for me for sure,” she said. “I had to take a step back and not self-sabotage.”

In his memoir, Chuck suggested that Anna left the show due to her struggles.

“I initially said no,” Chuck said of Anna’s casting. “I wasn’t sure Anna would be appropriate for this kind of material.” After some consideration, he decided that “someone’s personal life is none of my business” and “the mom in Mom would be, and should be, Anna Faris.”

He later concluded that he made the wrong decision. “As the years went by, it became apparent that my initial reluctance to hire Anna was, in fact, correct,” he wrote. He claimed that Anna “left the show for mysterious reasons that were not mysterious to anyone on the show.”

Anna spoke about her departure from Mom during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast earlier this year. She said she left the show during “a complicated time” in her life, but she also really appreciates the fact that she was involved in the “intense, amazing project” that “touched lives.”

“I do think the intensity, towards the end, I think I started to lose my focus,” she said.
