Ashanti and Nelly have big news. They are expecting their first baby together. But that’s not all. They are also engaged to be married. Ashanti took to Instagram on April 17, 2024, to share the happy news. She also spoke to Essence about it.
Nelly and Ashanti first met at a Grammy's press conference in 2003. They were pretty private about their romantic relationship but began dating sometime after their initial meeting. They also collaborated on several songs. They broke up in 2013 but found their way back to each other in 2023.
Ashanti’s Instagram announcement was in the form of a video. She is getting ready for a performance and her mom Tina Douglas asks how much longer she needs. "Uh, I'm gonna need about nine months," she revealed. Grandma gives her a surprised look.
This will be Ashanti and Nelly’s first baby together. Ashanti is a first-time mom while Nelly has three children from previous relationships. Nelly also adopted and raised his sister’s kids after she died from leukemia in March 2005.
Ashanti is over the moon and gushed to Essence about her joy. "This new year of my life is such a blessing full of love, hope and anticipation," she explained. "Motherhood is something that I have looked forward to, and sharing this with my family, fiancé and loyal fans, who have been so supportive of my career, is an amazing experience."

The baby news may not be a complete surprise to diehard fans. In December 2023, Nelly and Ashanti performed at the 11th Black and White Ball in St. Louis. Ashanti placed her hands on her stomach. Nelly noticed and followed her example. The couple couldn’t help but smile at one another as if they had a secret.
