A scary incident had a happy ending on February 16, 2024, in Austin, Texas. Four-year-old William Martinez Romero was saved by police officers Dalton Schroeder and Jason Wright. He was choking and the officers knew just what to do. Officer Schroeder came prepared with an anti-choking device he purchased with his own money for situations just like this.
The whole incident was caught on the officers’ bodycams. You can see Officer Schroeder running back to the car for the device. They both quickly jumped into action.
Officers Schroder and Wright were sent to the Menlo at Mueller Apartments in East Austin to perform a welfare check. Once they arrived, they were greeted by William’s family. They told the officers he was choking.
While Officer Schroder got the device, Officer Wright started giving him back blows. At the time it was believed that William was choking on a piece of candy. It was later determined that he was choking on his own saliva.

The Austin Police Department is proud of its officers. "The outstanding work done by Officer Schroeder and Officer Wright successfully saved the life of a young child," a statement read. "APD commends both officers on their swift and effective action."
William’s family is also thankful. It was hard for Guadalupe Romero, William’s mom, to watch the video of the incident. "It makes me sad and thankful with these two officers that got there really fast and that my son is still with me," she stated.
A press conference was held to discuss the incident. William was reunited with the officers who saved him and gave them a big hug.
