One of her brothers, singer Aaron Carter, died about a year earlier, in November 2022 at age 34. Bobbie Jean died of "intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl and methamphetamine,” according to a Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Department report obtained by People. Her sister, Leslie Carter, died of an overdose in 2012 at the age of 25. Nick Carter, 44, of the Backstreet Boys and Angel Carter, 36, are the only siblings in the family who are still alive.

Bobbie Jean was on probation for cocaine possession following the time she spent in prison from September through November 2023, according to People. However, her roommates said she was no longer using narcotics at the time of her death.
The day after Bobbie Jean's death, her sister, Angel, wrote a message to her on Instagram. "To my older sister Bobbie," she wrote. "You had a great sense of humor, and a lively spirit. Growing up, I was your baby, and you were my best friend. Life wasn’t fair to you, that I know. Sometimes, it feels like you didn’t have a shot, no matter what."
"Experiencing innocence instead of being burdened by trauma, pain, and suffering is incredibly important for children, particularly at such a young age," she continued. "I know why Leslie, Aaron, and now you ended up in the circumstances that you did. I share that pain we experienced during our childhood and I’m sorry you didn’t have an opportunity for a better life."
Concluding her message with, "I love you BJ, you’re free now. ️," Angel also wrote about how reducing stigma and supporting those with mental health challenges is crucial.
"We all need to break down barriers, reduce stigmas, and cultivate a society where seeking mental health support is met with understanding and encouragement," she continued in her post. "This starts with our children, and creating healthy conversation within the home."
Nick Carter also took to Instagram to share that he was "completely heartbroken" after Bobbie Jean's death. On January 4, he wrote, "It may take a lifetime to fully process the loss my family has endured over the years — most recently, with the sudden passing of our sister Bobbie Jean."
"Thank you for all your love and kind words. We are reminded again that life is precious, fleeting and to cherish the time we have with the ones we love. I know she is finally at peace with God. I love you BJ," Nick continued.
In 2013, Nick revealed that his family blamed his for the death of his sister, Leslie. When his dad called him to tell him about Leslie's death, he said "immediately the conversation turned into not about her death and not about the actual passing and what had occurred, [but] more about themselves. … And then I started to get blamed by the rest of the family.”
He added that "it’s tough when you come from a background like that and a home that is really up and down and roller-coaster.”
