Mother Mauled To Death By 25 Loose Great Danes: ‘Animal Control Is Just As Much At Fault’

A California community is outraged after a woman was mauled to death by a pack of 25 loose Great Danes on a walking trail. According to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office, the body of Davina Corbin, 56, was found with “numerous bite marks and injuries” by a neighbor on Blackhawk Trail in Feather Falls around 2 a.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2024.

The office also said that her clothes were covered in DNA matching domestic dogs. Her cause of death was determined by a medical examiner as a domestic dog attack.

Neighbors in the area told local news station KCRA that the death was 100% preventable, saying they've complained to Butte County Animal Control several times. Max Hecker, who lives near the trail, recalls run-ins with the dogs over the past two years, once even escaping them.

"The Great Danes, they come across the road here at me. I jumped in the car and left," he said. "Nothing’s been done about it until now," he added. "Wait until somebody gets killed by those dogs. That’s a tragedy that should have never, ever have happened, ever."

Hecker says animal control should have taken action when it was first told about the dogs. "What I’m saying is animal control is just as much at fault about that death as them dogs. They didn’t do anything about any of this," he said. "That is what I’m mad about. That lady should have never died."

Animal control said it only received two calls reporting loose dogs and malnourishment concerns about the animals, but that it didn't receive any reports of aggression.

After Corbin's death, authorities obtained a search warrant and spent all day Friday capturing the loose dogs, which are now in the custody of Butte County Animal Control. According to KCLA, the agency has no plans to euthanize the dogs at this time and investigators are still waiting on lab tests to determine which dog or dogs attacked Corbin, and what breed they are.

The victim's son, Justin Corbin, has organized a GoFundMe to cover costs of her funeral and laying her to rest. "We’re struggling to come to terms with this loss and need help saying goodbye," he wrote.
