Fans of Heath Ledger were stunned when news of the actor's death broke in 2008. Heath had starred in some of his generation's most beloved films, including 10 Things I Hate About You, A Knight's Tale, and Brokeback Mountain.
While Heath's death was ultimately determined to be due to an overdose of a variety of prescription medications — including oxycodone, hydrocodone, and diazepam — there were other details from the day that remain fuzzy at best. For starters: Just what did Mary-Kate Olsen really have to do with it all?

In January 2008, the New York Post insisted that masseuse Diane Lee Wolozin was the first person to discover Heath's body. Diane had let herself into Heath's apartment for a 3 p.m. appointment, as she had done countless times before.

Confusingly, Diane reportedly called former actress Mary-Kate Olsen first — twice. At the time, there was no known public connection between Heath and Mary-Kate, though more details of their possible relationship and interactions would eventually emerge.
Bustle notes that Mary-Kate and Heath had never been photographed together, and many people had no idea they were remotely linked until after Heath died. Rumors began to circulate about the nature of their relationship after Heath's death made headlines.
Eventually, a source revealed to People that Mary-Kate and Heath had been dating, kind of. The source said, "Mary-Kate and Heath were casually dating for three months before Heath’s death. They were hooking up, but neither were particularly interested in making it exclusive."
The source added, "They had a bond that was based on partying, and they had the same tastes in partying … like, in terms of where they liked to hang out in New York, what time they would want to go out. They just had the same sensibility."
Authorities were interested in investigating the relationship between the two following Heath's death, but Mary-Kate reportedly would not cooperate without immunity. Her representative released a statement addressing the matter, explaining, "Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger's home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them."
The case was closed without any further investigation.
Mary-Kate has never publicly commented on Heath's death, and there is no mention of her in the 2017 documentary I Am Heath Ledger. While there has been speculation about what might have happened that day and in the hours leading up to Heath's passing, it seems that we may never truly know.
