Kirsten Dunst recently opened up about ageism and Hollywood, which led to a revelation about why she hasn't been working lately. The 41-year-old actress spilled a lot in her cover story for Marie Claire as part of its 2024 Makers Issue.
In her interview, she talked about how after her acting in the 2021 Western, The Power of the Dog, she was only being offered the "sad mom" roles. As a result, she decided to take a step back from acting for two years because she wasn’t being offered the roles she felt were really worth her time.
“To be honest, that’s been hard for me," she said, "because I need to feed myself. The hardest thing is being a mom and not feeling like, I have nothing for myself. That’s every mother — not just me.”
“There’s definitely less good roles for women my age," she added. Eventually, Kirsten was offered a role in Alex Garland’s Civil War, which she accepted. She also later opened up in the interview about being drawn to female directors.

“I feel like I get hired because I’m someone that [male directors] might want to sleep with,” she explained. “I think that’s probably why I migrated to so many female directors at a younger age because I didn’t want to feel that way.”
