In the world of medical oddities, a 2023 case detailed in the medical journal BMJ Case Reports has left readers wincing. The case study unravels the painful tale of an Italian motorcyclist who suffered an unusual and distressing injury after a traumatic crash. The unfortunate incident led to the dislocation of the man’s right testicle, propelling it into his abdomen and sparking a challenging medical case that has both shocked and intrigued the medical community.
The New York Post reported that the incident unfolded when an unidentified 20-something Italian man was in a severe motorcycle crash, which resulted in the dislocation of his right testicle. LiveScience reported that the impact of the motorcycle crash propelled the man’s testicle out of its usual place in the scrotum and through the inguinal canal, a small passageway in the groin.
In an incredibly rare turn of events, the displaced testicle settled in the abdomen, leading to excruciating pain for the patient. Upon arriving at the hospital, the medical team faced a unique challenge, the patient had a significant mass of clotted blood in the scrotum, obstructing a proper examination of the displaced testicle.
Addressing this issue was the initial hurdle for doctors, who had to stem the hemorrhage and drain the blood reservoir before tending to the man’s other injuries, including a serious pelvic fracture. The New York Post stated, “A subsequent CT scan helped locate the displaced testicle.”
To address the dislocated testicle, doctors performed an orchidopexy, a procedure commonly used to treat children whose testicles do not fully descend during development. This involved warming the oxygen-deprived organ and carefully securing it back into its normal position. Despite the complexity of the procedure, the medical team successfully restored the testicle to its rightful place.

Six months after the traumatic incident, the man’s reproductive system had returned to normal, with no adverse impacts on hormone and semen production. The New York Post stated, “Of all the instances of motorcycle-induced testicular displacement, which comprise 80% of total cases, only 6% of them saw the genitals make it all the way to the abdomen.”
