When JD Vance spoke to a crowd ahead of the 2026 midterm elections in a clip that was shared on TikTok, he used the opportunity to take a dig at his daughter, 4-year-old Mirabel Vance. In the clip, he talks about enlisting his kids to go through their toys to donate for a toy drive. But what his daughter did instead of gathering her own toys for donation caused Vance to label her as a potential future Democrat.
He jokes in the clip that he has “work to do” now, at least when it comes to his daughter. And even in the clip, there aren’t too many laughs. Apparently, MAGA is alright with making fun of Dems, but even many of them appear to agree that Vance didn’t need to bring his daughter into it. The joke also fell flat with actual Democrats who would be only too happy to have all of Vance’s kids in their party someday.
JD Vance called his young daughter a Democrat and joked about it.
@cbsnews Vice President JD Vance joked that his 4-year-old daughter, Mirabel, might be a Democrat after she picked out two of her brothers' favorite toys to donate to the family's annual Christmas toy drive. Speaking ahead of Tuesday's midterm elections, Vance recalled asking his daughter to find toys to give away, only to discover she had chosen her brothers' favorites instead of unopened ones. "I got a little work to do," Vance joked. "Maybe she's a Democrat."

In the clip, Vance explains that his daughter picked out two toys and brought them to him as a donation. But the toys belonged to her brothers and not her, which is what prompted Vance to make the joke about his daughter’s potential future political affiliation. I guess the joke is that Democrats take from people and give to the less fortunate? But Vance’s need to include his daughter in the joke was the icky part.
“So I told Mirabel, my 4-year-old daughter, I said, ‘honey, alright, go to the toy closet, and get me a couple toys,’ because we need to start thinking about the toy drive that we do every year for Christmas,” Vance says in the clip. “And Mirabel comes back with two of her brothers’ favorite toys. Not the unopened toys, but two of her brother’s favorite toys. And I realized, ladies and gentlemen, that I got a little work to do, because a little girl who’s taken from her brothers, maybe she’s a Democrat. Worried a little bit about that.”
At this point, who knows if the story is even true? Vance could very well have fabricated it, or changed it a bit, to fit his narrative of Democrats making awful decisions and his daughter possibly being one of them someday.
Critics immediately called out JD Vance for his poor choice of words with his joke.

In the comments, people called out Vance for “hating” his wife and kids. Others shared possible reasons his daughter might have chosen toys that belong to her brothers rather than her own. And anyway, aren’t toy drives typically for brand new toys?
“He is so openly misogynistic,” someone commented on the TikTok.
“Wait, so taking toys from your siblings turns you into a democrat?” Another person wrote. “Wtf is this man on?”
Someone else added, “May this type of love never find my children.”
And, a user speculated, “He hates his wife AND his children.”
JD Vance has made other odd comments about his kids and wife.
There was also that one time when Vance was asked by The New York Times about his wife Usha Vance and her religion. Vance is Catholic and Usha is Hindu. During the interview, Vance said his wife has been too busy with the kids to focus on religion. But it was his choice of words that stuck with people.
“She’s got three kids,” he said at the time. “Obviously, I help with the kids, but because I’m kind of the one going to church, she feels more responsibility to keep the kids quiet in the church.”
That mention of Usha having three kids instead of “we” have three kids really pointed to Vance’s thoughts on his family as. Whole for some of his critics.
