Even though he is no longer with us, Jenna Hager Bush loves her grandpa, the late President George H.W. Bush, very much. She is keeping his memory alive. June 12, 2024, would have been his 100th birthday. To celebrate this milestone, she wrote a letter to her "Gampy."
Jenna shared this letter on Today. She reflected on the many lessons he taught her over the years. The most important being to always be kind and show love.
Jenna said writing this letter was "therapeutic" for her. "We miss you," it began. "We miss your letters and emails. We miss racing through the waves of the Atlantic on your boat, fishing, laughing, and debating around the dinner table."
Jenna went on to list some of the lessons she learned from her grandpa. "Don't be afraid to shed a tear when your heart is broken, or when a friend is hurting. Nobody likes an overbearing big shot. And as you succeed, be kind to people, thank those that help you along the way." Her grandpa was big on quiet kindness and compassion.

This letter is not the only way Jenna's family will honor her grandfather, who died in 2018. Several family members will go skydiving, just like the former president used to. He did this to honor the military and his World War II service.
Jenna concludes by assuring her grandpa that his legacy lives on. She feels him with her often, especially when she does "simple acts of love" or when she sees the "smiles of your great-grandchildren." She even sees him in the "thousand points of light" in the sky. Jenna's letter was a beautiful tribute.
