Former first lady Laura Bush obviously loves her daughters, but being their mom didn’t come without difficulties. During a Today interview, Laura spoke to her twin daughters, Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager, who were once a bit “wild.” She revealed that she and her husband, former President George W. Bush, were “so thrilled to” welcome twins, but ran into some issues as their babies got older.
“Sometimes we were wild,” Jenna admitted — though from her mom’s perspective, Jenna was always “the wildest” daughter. During the interview, Jenna asked her mom, “What do you feel like having twins taught you about yourself?”
Laura said she learned “to be very patient,” adding, “Were you great? Not really.” Defending herself, Jenna quipped, “We only got arrested twice.” Laura reminded Jenna that she was the one who got arrested twice — not Barbara. “That was you,” Laura told Jenna. “And, I think, was your dad president?”
Jenna admitted that her father, who was in the White House from 2001 to 2009, was president during the phase of her life that led to two arrests. “Unfortunately, I think he was,” she said.
During the interview, Jenna also praised her mom and dad for their parenting style. “You guys gave us — which I think was a really great gift — the freedom to make mistakes,” she told her mother. Laura had a heartwarming response: “We didn’t expect y’all to be perfect.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Laura also spoke about watching her daughters become parents. Jenna Bush Hager is mom to three children, while her twin sister Barbara is a mom of two. Watching her daughters become parents has been “really fun,” Laura said.
“Of course, I knew you would both be great mothers,” she told her daughters.
