Jimmy Buffet died on September 1, 2023. According to his family, his passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by family, friends, music, and his dogs. He was 76 years old.
An official obituary posted to the singer’s website listed his cause of death as Merkel cell skin cancer. Jimmy was diagnosed with this rare, aggressive skin cancer four years ago. He continued to perform during his treatments but had to cancel several shows because of the disease. What would become his last performance was a surprise appearance in Rhode Island in July 2023.
Jimmy leaves behind his wife Jane, to whom he was married for 46 years. He is also survived by his three children Savannah, Sarah, and Cameron, grandson Marley, and two sisters, Laurie and Lucy. His wolf pack of pups will also mourn his loss.
The family is asking his fans to donate to organizations that were important to Jimmy instead of giving flowers. They asked the public to support Jimmy Buffett’s Foundation Singing for Change, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, or the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Cancer is such a horrible disease that takes away too many, too soon.
